Gave son task of HVAC maintenance

I’m a firm believer that children need to be treated like they are small adults at a certain point.

I know there are so many parents out there who would completely disagree with this idea.

A lot of people want to protect their children from the realities of life for as long as they possibly can. I understand wanting to give your child an excellent experience growing up… But you also need to equip them for all of the life events that will happen afterwards. I don’t think you’re doing your kid any favor if they don’t have basic life skills by the time they turn 18. This is why I’m constantly giving my children small tasks to perform around the house. I want them to grow up to be responsible, self-sufficient, and handy. Most recently, I decided to hand over the indoor air handling control system maintenance to my oldest son. He has always had a penchant for the indoor air handling control system because he is so obsessed with the thermostat. Rarely a day goes by that I don’t see him fiddling with the central heating, cooling, and ventilation control system. I thought it would it be a good life lesson if he understood how the forced air furnace and air conditioning system actually work, rather than relying on our smart thermostat and professional HVAC technicians to handle the brunt of the HVAC responsibilities. I taught my son how you properly change an air filter in the central heating and cooling system. I showed him how you can clean and vacuum extensive lengths of air duct work. I even gave him a crash course on programming the thermostat for eco-friendly energy usage. I think he’s learning a lot… and I’m a lot less stressed about our indoor air.
