Sometimes I feel like my wife and I are better off just getting divorced.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the woman more than anything.
I desperately want to be able to settle into old age with her as my only romantic partner. I think that we have a beautiful life ahead of us if we can manage to get over a few small compromises that we both need to make. The problem is, I do not get along well with her family or have fond feelings for my in-laws. Since the day that we’ve started dating I have been nervous about my wife’s parents. They simply don’t see things the way that I do. For instance, they have been mad at me for over two years because of my choice in indoor air handling devices. If it seems like heating and cooling systems have nothing to do with my relationship with my in-laws… I agree. However, they have taken my interest in energy-efficient air handling equipment and turned it into a negative thing that impacts our ability to get along. The problem all started when my central heating and cooling system was getting rather old. Of course, I realized that I was going to need a professional heating and cooling inspector to help me replace my forced air furnace and air conditioning unit. At the time I was very concerned with energy efficiency so we could reduce our energy bills and our impact on the global climate. Apparently, this was very controversial for my in-laws. As firm believers that global warming is not a real thing they took my heating and cooling upgrade personally. To this day, they can’t come over to our house without bitching and complaining about their “Nancy left wing son-in-law and his fake news HVAC system.”
