HVAC system seems to run all the time

By the middle of October most people in our area have already turned on their furnace for the first time.

Hopefully in most cases they’ve had it serviced before trying it out because over the summer things can happen to cause problems.

Our business definitely picks up once all of this starts because we are a local HVAC repair company and it never fails that our calls double during this time of year. Last week we got a call from a guy who said that his furnace was constantly turning on and off and he didn’t know why. He said he had the temperature set just as he always did to 72° and the house seemed warm, but the furnace kept turning on and off to keep it at that temperature. Could be just about anything including a clogged filter, improper air flow, or even a problem with the thermostat itself but that we would gladly come out to check things out for him. This time of year we always run a special on tune-ups anyway so we signed him up for that but indicated that we would fix anything that we found as well. I explained to him that the $69 tune-up fee would cover the actual visit along with filter change so if it was just that it should fix the problem. He was happy to make an appointment and we headed out there in a couple of days to see what the problem was. Turns out the problem was improper air flow because there was an obstruction in part of his ductwork and once that was fixed his furnace ran just fine.
